About The Dutch Clan Ferguson

William Ferguson* became the founder of the Dutch Ferguson family when he registered as a citizen of Amsterdam in 1782.

When his grandson Jonathan moved to Curaçao in 1818, it marked the start of the wanderlust of the Dutch Fergusons. Jonathan married there and started a family, but his grandchildren were sent to the Netherlands for their education.

Many of them went abroad again (mainly to the Dutch East Indies), but continued to send their children to the Netherlands for their education..

All these children were stayed with relatives, creating very strong family bonds between the Fergusons.

After WWII this changed, largely due to the emergence of Indonesia. From that time on most of the family lived in the Netherlands, so no chidren needed to stay with relatives any more,  As a result, family ties became increasingly weaker and family contact became rarer.

De familieband van de Nederlandse Clan Ferguson

George Ferguson * hosted a family gathering in 1982. He had been working on the Ferguson Genealogy for many years and was eager to meet everyone. The meeting was a great success. A large number of Fergusons came together and it turned out to be great fun! There was a second meeting in 1984, but then little happened for 10 years.

In 1994, Theo Ferguson** took over the care for genealogy and the Ferguson family tree. As this grew, the desire arose to safeguard and pass it on. The first steps in this were taken when he became a member of the Scottish Clan Ferguson Society.

Another successful family gathering was organized in 1993.  Theo, together with Elsmar Ferguson***, then decided to set up a true Family Association as part of the Scottish Clan, and this was formally established in 1994 with the signing of the statutes.

Our Goals

De doelstellingen van de Nederlandse Clan Ferguson

The original articles of association of the Dutch Clan Ferguson were submitted to Notaris Van der Kooi in Odoorn on July 13, 1994.

Our Articles of Association

In the original articles of association the following was included in Article 9 paragraph 7:

"The positions of chairman, secretary, and treasurer may be held only by persons who bear the name of, or can reasonably prove to be descended from Fergusson, Ferguson, Fergus or any variation thereof."

Unfortunately, in 2006, there were no longer enough interested members of the Clan named Ferguson to comply with this article. Therefor, an amendment to the Articles of Association was implemented, so that it was again possible to form a board
